Chapter History
The Phi Beta Chapter of Psi Upsilon was born on April 14, 1984, when 21 undergraduates and one honorary member were formally initiated into the bonds of brotherhood. But its roots rest deeper. In 1981, a group of friends led by Kip Smith and Phil Evans wondered if there might be space for something different than what they found in W&M’s fraternity scene—a fraternity that balanced academics, community service, and social activities as well as accepted people for who they really were. These early brothers-in-waiting established an indefinable yet recognizable, positive, and singular culture that embraced individualism but also hungered for community. Psi U was, then, a place for brotherhood, but not conformity. And it remains so today, just the right amount of different.
